Hello all and Happy New Year, been slacking cause of the holidays but I'm back. Here's the first one-timer of the new year: THE JETS ARE COMING!!! On Saturday, the Jets and Colts squared off during Wild Card Weekend. Both teams played tough, trying to earn a spot in next weeks divisional match ups. With under 3 minutes left, Mark Sanchez and the Jets got the ball down 2 points due to a great offensive drive by Peyton Manning. Sanchez looked calm, cool, and collected as he drove his offense down field, completing 3 passes for 38 yards. LT looked like himself again, rushing for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Sanchez made a great pass to Braylon Edwards to get the Jets in field goal range. As Sanchez let the clock run down to 3 seconds, the Jets took a time out to bring on the field goal unit. Nick Folk stepped on to the field to attempt a potential 51-yard field goal. Since the game was in Indy's dome, a 51 yarder is very makeable. With a great snap and hold, Folk was able to chip it through the uprights as time expired to punch their one-way ticket to New England next weekend. BRING ON THE JETS BABY!!!! In other wild card action, the Ravens were able to pull off the road win in Kansas City to play next weekend in Pittsburgh. In the NFC, underdog Seattle was able to knock off defending world champion New Orleans Saints while Green Bay beat the Eagles in Philadelphia. Next weekend host some great NFL games. Outside of Pats-Jets on Sunday afternoon, another great game to watch could be the between the Packers and Falcons, which very likely could product the NFC Super Bowl Representative. In other Boston news, the Bruins let Boston fans down once again as they took on the Canadians in Montreal. The Bruins were up 2-0 off of two goals by Patrice Bergeron with 3 minutes left. At the three minute mark, Canadians were on the Power Play when former New Jersey Devil Scott Gomez sent a puck in from the point, deflecting off of two Bruins sneaking by Thomas in net. This Power Play goal but the Canadians on the board, cutting the defecit in half. With under a minute left, the Habs pulled their goalie to gain the extra skater. On the attack, Zdeno Chara intercepted a pass and sent the puck the length of the ice, missing the empty net by inches. After the icing, the Canadians won the faceoff in the Bruins' zone, and converted on a tip in by Brian Gionta to tie up the game, forcing OT. In overtime, Candian forward Max Pacioretty beat Tim Thomas top shell to clinch the victory. The Bruins were able to get a point out of this game, but this may go down as the worst loss of the season. The Bruins are still in 3rd place in the East, but if they don't start scoring, they could be in some trouble coming down the stretch. We'll see if they can get it together tonight as the take on the Penguins in Pittsburgh. The Celts lost a tough one to the Bulls yesterday, 90-79. They've had a tough swing the past week, with the Heat gaining lots of ground, as the top 5 seeds in the East are separated by 5 games. Although the case, Rondo came back and has been playing well, while Kendrick Perkins says he's under 3 weeks away from returning. Look for Delonte West to be back in action after the All Star break as well. Reinforcements are coming, should make for a great stretch run. What to Watch : The BCS National Championship is finally being played tonight as #1 Auburn Tigers take on #2 Oregon Ducks. Should be a shoot out. Till Next Time...... |

Happy Festivus! Not much going on in Beantown the past few days. The Celts were in action last night, looking for their 14th straight win as they took on the Philadelphia 76ers at the TD Garden in front of 17,000+.  The 76ers came closer than anyone has in beating the Celtics throughout their win streak. The Celtics trailed by trailed by 6 entering the break, and brought it in the third quarter, outscoring the 76ers by 9 points to take the lead going into the 4th. Each team traded shot for shot, leading to an 84-80 win and current best 14 game winning streak. Ray Allen lead all scorers with 22 points. Pierce, Garnett, and Shaq were all in double figures as well. Nate Robinson has looked solid in Rondo's absence, which makes this streak look even better. The Celtics got some big minutes from Glen Davis and Marquis Daniels off the bench as well. With this win, the Celtics look to put their 14 game win streak on the line Christmas Day against the new look Orlando Magic. Tip-off is slated for 2:30. Another must-see game will tip off after the Celtics, where the Miami Heat travel to LA to take on the Lakers. Should be some good basketball this weekend. Some other notes:

It’s been a little while and there’s a lot to catch up on… The B’s were in action last night as they took on the Anaheim Mighty Ducks at the TD Garden. For their 4 game in a row, the B’s got off to a slow start. Anaheim opened up the scoring 15 minutes in off of a Brandon McMillan goal that beat Tim Thomas. It was surprising that the B’s made it out of the first period only down a goal, considering the Ducks carried the play. The Ducks extended their lead to 2 goals early in the second. The Ducks also added a short-handed goal later in the period to clinch the 3-0 win. Tim Thomas was alright in net, making 22 saves. However, it’s the offense that’s in question. Former #3 overall pick Nathan Horton has been struggling as of late, contributing no points during the B’s 4 game slide. It feels there could be a change coming, whether it be Claude Julien or a major trade that happens. The B’s have been getting solid goaltending from Thomas, but they’re having trouble scoring. It’ll be an interesting next few weeks for the B’s; we’ll see if they continue to slide. They’re in action again Thursday night against the Thrashers.  The Sox have been doing some wheeling and dealing to finalize their roster for opening day. Their focus the past week since their huge off-season splashes has been the bullpen. The Sox locked up former Chicago White Sox closer Bobby Jenks to a 2 year, $12 million deal, pending today’s physical. This could prove to be a great pickup if he can return to his form from a few years ago. Also, the Sox signed relievers Dan Wheeler, Matt Albers, Andrew Miller, and Rich Hill to deals. The bullpen looks like it’s starting to come together. (Other notes: Fan favorite Lenny DiNardo has come back to Boston on a minor league deal…… The Sox sent Eric Patterson to the Padres as the player to be named later in the Adrian Gonzalez trade.) Coming off their big Sunday night win against the Packers, the Pats are close to clinching both the division and the #1 seed in the playoffs. At 12-2, the Pats have 2 games left to play. Both the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets hold 10-4 records. If the Pats win either of their last two games, they will clinch both the division and the #1 seed in the AFC. Also, they can clinch if both the Steelers and Jets lose any of their last two games also. In reality, the Pats have 3+ weeks to sure up their defense to make another run at the Lombardi Trophy.  Another quick note, Shaq conducted the Boston Pops last night. He’s really stepped in to the Boston scene! |

Here’s a roundup of Boston Sports from the weekend: The Pats were in action yesterday taking on the Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago. A huge snow storm was ripping through the Mid-West, leaving piles of snow all over the field. Temperatures read in the 20s throughout the game, reaching single digits with the wind chill. That did not stop the Patriots’ Offense (and Defense). Tom Brady threw for 369 yards and 2 touchdowns in the 36-7 upheaval of the Bears. Brady picked apart the 3 overall defense in the league, connecting with Deion Branch 8 times for 151 yards and a touchdown to end the first half. Wes Welker added another 8 catches and 115 receiving yards. The offense was clicking on all cylinders, despite the weather they were facing. The defense stepped up in the win as well. Bears’ QB Jay Cutler struggled, going 12-26 with 152 yards and 2 interceptions. The Bears couldn’t seem to get anything going against this young Patriots defense. Gary Guyton stepped up in place of suspended Brandon Spikes forcing fumbles and returning one for a touchdown. This win was the 5 straight for the Patriots, who are owners of an 11-2 record sitting atop the AFC. With the win, the Pats officially clinched a Playoff spot, although their work is far from done. The Pats hold a 2 game advantage in the AFC East over the Jets, but only hold a game lead on Pittsburgh for home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Pats have three games remaining on their schedule. The Pats’ will be in action again next Sunday night as they take on the Green Bay Packers at Gillette. Aaron Rogers is questionable after sustaining his second concussion of the season in yesterday’s 7-3 loss to the Detroit Lions. The B’s also played host to the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday night. Both teams seemed to be feeling each out in the first period, ending it in a 0-0 tie. The action began to pick up in the second period, with the Flyers getting on the board first late in the second frame. The B’s tied it up in the 3, off of Nathan Horton’s goal that beat Flyers’ goalie Brian Boucher glove side. Both teams were held scoreless the rest of the way, so OT was needed to settle this game. In OT, the B’s were outshot 7-2, with Tim Thomas making great saves to keep the B’s in it. With seconds remaining in overtime, Marc Savard turned the puck over in the neutral zone, leading the Flyers on an odd-man rush. Flyers captain Mike Richards took the puck up on Thomas’ left hand side, held the puck, and beat Thomas, sneaking it in past the post. Thomas had 31 saves in the lost, recording only his second loss of the season. Although the B’s lost, they increased their point streak to 6 games, while maintaining the 6 position in the East. The B’s are only 2 points behind the Canadians for the division lead. The B’s will be in action again Wednesday night as they travel north to Buffalo to take on the Sabres. Pucks drops at 7:05. The Celts were also in action Saturday as they took on the Bobcats. In a rather uneventful game, Allen and Davis lead the scoring with 16 points apiece as they beat the Bobcats by 31 points. This was the Celts 10 win in a row. They will be travelling to New York to face the Knicks on Wednesday night, who also happen to be sporting an 8 game winning streak of their own. |

Here’s a sports recap taking you into the weekend:  Last night, the B’s took on the New York Islanders at the TD Garden. Coming off a 4 game point streak (3-0-1), the Bruins looked to continue their winning ways behind goaltender Tuuka Rask. The B’s struck first with 6 minutes to go in the first on Lucic’s 15th goal of the season. Savard got the assist, tallying his first point of the 2010-2011 season. The Islanders tied it up in the second with Frans Nielsen scoring on a penalty. Later in the second, David Krejci went to the sin bin for hooking, but that didn’t stop the B’s. Brad Marchand intercepted a pass in the offensive and scored on Islanders’ net-minder Rick DiPietro to give the B’s a 2-1 lead. In the third, Michael Ryder scored on the Power Play to give the B’s the go ahead goal. New York made it interesting late, scoring with 3:30 to play, but the B’s tacked on two empty netters by Lucic and Bergeron to clinch a 5-2 win. The B’s didn’t play great, but did enough to win last night. Tuuka played alright, making 33 saves in the victory. This is only Tuuka’s 2 win of the season. The B’s improved to 16-8-3 on the season. With last night’s win, the B’s moved up to 5 in the East, trailing conference leading Pittsburgh by 6 points. The B’s are heading to Philadelphia on Saturday night in a rematch of last weeks win. Puck drops at 7:05. Other Bruins news, Marc Stuart injured his hand in Tuesday night’s OT win. He will be out 4 -6 weeks recovering. Also, the B’s made a couple trades yesterday, restocking their AHL team.  The Annual MLB Winter Meetings wrapped up yesterday and the Red Sox made one of the biggest splashes in recent history. On Sunday, the Sox got Adrian Gonzalez via trade from the Padres and are in the process of signing him to a 7 year, $154 million extension. Next, the Sox picked up the biggest free agent position player on the market this year: Carl Crawford. The Sox should be announcing their agreement to a 7 year, $142 million deal this morning, pending a physical. Although investing about $300 million this offseason, the Sox are not done. They are rumored to be a top contender for former two time all-star, free agent catcher Russell Martin. Also, the Sox are rumored to be in the mix on a bunch of relievers, one of which is Scott Downs from Toronto. With two pickups and more on the way, it’s hard not to expect great things from this team, especially when Josh Beckett and John Lackey are your number 3 and 4 starters coming into the 2011 campaign. Stay tuned…The Celtics continued their winning ways last night in Philadelphia. Although the Celts were down two big men in Shaq and Jermaine O’Neil, they grinded out another victory. The 4 quarter was back and forth, and the 76ers took a one point lead with 10 seconds to play. Doc called a time out and drew up an incredible inbound play. Rondo lob passed to Garnett for a layup to clinch the victory. The Celts are now 18-4 and sitting atop the Eastern Conference by 3 games. Once the Celts get healthy, they are going to be a dangerous team to play. Last but not least, the Pats are coming off a huge Monday victory against the Jets with another monster game in front of them. Sunday, the Pats are travelling to Chicago to take on the Bears. The Pats are looking to better their league leading record to 11-2, pushing them one step closer to home field advantage in the Playoffs. If their defense can play as well as they did last week, there will be huge expectations come January and February for this team. With two teams currently in the top spot of their respective leagues, one within striking distance, and another making huge free agent splashes, this should shape up for an awesome 2011 season in Boston.  It was a very busy weekend for our local sports teams. Although there are multiple winter sports going on, we are a baseball town. Theo Epstein and Co. came through in a big way for our local nine, sending a package of minor leaguers to the San Diego Padres for perennial all-star and 2 time NL gold glove winner Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez has averaged 31 homers and 100 RBIs in his 5 seasons with the Padres. The Sox gave up 3 of our top 6 prospects, including a potential ace pitcher Casey Kelly. Overall, it was a very fair trade that helps our team incredibly. Gonzalez fills that power bat we’ve been missing the last few years. His swing is perfect for Fenway and this may become one of the best lineups we’ve had since Manny and Papi were in their prime. Although a contract extension has not been reached, it is expected the two sides will finalize one just after opening day, in order to help out the luxury tax. The Sox are still in need of an outfielder and bullpen help. Both of these questions should be answered at the Winter Meetings, which are going on this week in Florida. All in all, solid weekend for the Boston Red Sox. Amass the craziness on Yawkey Way, the Bruins were in action Saturday night north of the border as they took on Phil Kessel and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Once again, Tim Thomas had an incredible game, tallying 38 saves on 40 shots. Nathan Horton put the B’s on the board first with his 9 goal of the season 5 minutes in to the first period. The Leafs came back off of Carl Gunnarson’s give and go to tie up the contest at one apiece. That was all of the scoring until the 3 period, when Gregory Cambell put the Bruins ahead on a nice goal that beat JS Giugere top shelf. With under 2 minutes left in the game, Patrice Bergeron was called for a “soft” penalty, one of those that should be overlooked in the last two minutes. Nevertheless, the B’s were down a man, when Toronto pulled their goalie to give them a 2 man advantage. Toronto ended up scoring off of Kris Versteeg’s shot, to even up the game with seconds remaining. There was no scoring in OT, which led to a shootout. After made shots by each team, Phil Kessel came to center ice with the game in his hands. He beat Thomas, securing Toronto’s two points for the win. The B’s do get 1 point out of this shootout loss. The B’s are 5 points back of the Canadians for 1 in the Atlantic Division. Their next game is Thursday against the Sabres at the Garden. Other local sports: · The Celtics beat the NJ Nets by 25 points to better their record to 16 – 4. Nate Robinson had 21 points in Rondo’s absence. · Tiger Woods lost in a Playoff to Graeme McDowell at the Chevron Championships. Tiger officially went winless during the 2010 campaign. · The Pats are in action tonight against division rival New York Jets. This game will have implications on AFC East champion, playoff seeding, and Super Bowl. · UCONN and BC both received Bowl Bids, with UCONN gaining a trip to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. · Everett High Beat St. John’s to secure the D1 High School Super Bowl. |

The Bruins were back in action last night, looking to build on their win from the night before, hosting the Tampa Bay Lightning and the TD Garden. Marc Savard’s return was just what the doctor ordered. The team was on fire from the time the puck dropped to start the first period. Led behind David Krejci’s 2 goal night and Michael Ryder’s 3 point night, the B’s put 8 goals up on the scoreboard. This was the first time they’ve put up 8 goals since the beginning of the 2008 campaign. Tim Thomas played incredible once again, making 37 saves on 38 shots. The underlying theme of last night’s game was the return of Marc Savard to the lineup. He logged about 16 minutes of ice team and played real well. He’s an added addition to the team. In addition, there were talks that the Bruins traded Marco Sturm to the LA Kings. These reports are still unconfirmed, and he is currently still with the team. In other news: · The Red Sox were involved in a couple interesting things yesterday. First, they re-signed their captain Jason Varitek to a 1 year/ $2million contract. They also met with Jason Werth to discuss the potential of him joining the Sox. Lastly, Big Papi had his annual golf tournament down in the Dominican. Adrian Beltre was there and there have been reports that he wants to return to Fenway for the next few years. Stay tuned… · Lebron made his return to Cleveland amass tons of “boos” throughout the game. He scored 38 points, with 24 of them coming in the 3 quarter. The B’s were in action last night as they took on the top team in the East, the Philadelphia Flyers in Phili. This was the first time the two teams have met since the game 7 loss in the playoffs last year. The Bruins came out strong after a couple poor performances over recent games. The scoring began with Patrice Bergeron netting his 5 goal of the season in the first period, while on the power play. Their second of the game came from rookie Tyler Seguin, also scoring his 5 of the year. The B’s last goal came off an empty netter by Milan Lucic to secure a 3 -0 victory. Timmy Thomas stood on his head, stopping all 41 shots that came his way. This is Thomas’ 5 shutout of the season, who improved to 9-0-0 on the road and 12-2-1 overall. The Bruins will look to build on this win as they take on Tampa Bay at the Garden tonight. In other Bruins news, a few days ago the B’s traded defenseman Matt Hunwick to the Colorado Avalanche for former BU standout Colby Cohen. Cohen will report down to Providence to serve as one of their defensemen. This move created enough salary cap flexibility to bring back center Marc Savard from injured reserve, which could be as early as tonight. The B’s will have important decisions to make regarding the cap when Marco Sturm also returns from injury later this month. Some other Boston notes: · The Celtics won last night as the held off the Trail Blazers 99 – 95 behind Paul Pierce’s 28 points. · The Pats will be looking to win their 4 straight on Monday night as they host division rival New York Jets. This game will be for first place in the AFC East as well as the top seed in the AFC. · The Red Sox made some news yesterday when they took a trip to Houston to meet with free agent outfielder Carl Crawford. This would be a huge pickup for the Sox if they could get the deal done. Watch for things to unfold during the Winter Meetings, which starts this coming Monday. Another important note, Lebron will be making his way back to Cleveland for the first time since his “Decision” to join. The Cavs will be hosting the Heat tonight with tip off slated for 8:00. Hi all, Sports are huge in Boston and through our busy lives, its tough to keep up with everything going on. Well, hopefully the One Timer is an easy blog for you to read and get up to speed on whats going on so you can talk about the game last night. With out further ado, here's the inaugural one timer: Our Boston Bruins were in action last night as they took on the 20 year old sensation Steven Stamkos and the Tampa Bay Lighting down in Florida. Behind Tuuka Rask in net, the B’s came out real sloppy and were dominated through the first two periods. Although they managed to get out of the first period tied 0-0, Tampa began their scoring spree in the second, capping off a 3 goal period with Stamkos scoring his league leading 20 goal of the season. The B’s only managed 15 shots on net through the first two frames. In the third, the B’s showed a little life when Michael Ryder scored his 150 career goal, but the B’s could never really get it going and ultimately lost 3-1 to a hot goaltender in Mike Smith, who made 26 saves on the night. The Bruins have to put this loss behind them, as they are in action 3 times over the next 5 days. They’ll be @ Florida (11/24), home against Carolina (11/26), and @ Atlanta (11/28) to close out the month of November, in which they are 5-4-2 so far. The Bruins look to build momentum over the next few games to gain some ground on the first place Flyers before they match up with them on December 1 in Philadelphia. In other Bruins news, Marc Savard will undergo tests today for the concussion he received at the end of the 2009 season. Hopefully, he will be cleared to participate in full contact practices this week, with an eye to return to action before Christmas. Some other quick Boston notes: · The Celts beat the Hawks 99-76 behind 16 pts and 10 assists from Nate Robinson. · The Pats will be coming off a huge win against Indy and travel to Detroit for a Turkey Day matinee with the Lions, kick-off slated for 12:30. · Red Sox hot stove is heating up, with tons of rumors surrounding the team, the newest being around Arizona’s outfielder Justin Upton and San Diego’s first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. (The annual Winter Meetings are less than 3 weeks away) |
